mutant stage 1

In this first Mutant Stage episode, two strange and multiplied figures move in the cracks and nooks of the 9 rue du Plâtre’s construction site. From the roof to the basement, the dancers explore and interact with the building, like slow and furtive creatures roaming an undefined habitat. They cross the 9 rue du Plâtre, immersed in artificial lights, while highlighting the building’s improbable spaces.

Volmir Cordeiro (b. 1987 in Brazil, lives and works in Paris) trained at Centre National de Danse Contemporaine-Angers and is currently working on a PhD thesis on figures of marginality in contemporary dance at Paris VIII University. Inspired both by his studies and time spent in the favelas of Rio with Lia Rodrigues’ company, Volmir Cordeiro wishes to bring to life those who are “condemned to weaken, disappear, derail.”

In previous works, Cordeiro has shown a strong interest in exploring the physicality of marginal and underprivileged figures such as precarious workers, displaced intellectuals, disengaged citizens, and immigrants. Cordeiro took part in Xavier Le Roy’s live exhibition Retrospective in Rio de Janeiro (Panorama festival, 2013) and in Paris (Centre Pompidou, 2014).

the mutant stage project

Mutant Stage is a series of choreographed short films initiated by Amélie Couillard and Dimitri Chamblas, and produced by Lafayette Anticipations – Fondation d’entreprise Galeries Lafayette during the renovation of its 9 rue du Plâtre building between 2015 to 2018.

Throughout the renovation conducted by OMA and Rem Koolhaas, and until the public opening of the Fondation at the beginning of 2018, the 9 rue du Plâtre building is the object of an investigation into its own mutation. The evolving architecture is measured over the months by in situ encounters between directors and performers. Each shoot serves the opportunity for a different encounter that sets bodies and matter into motion, breathing life into the changing building.

Amélie Couillaud and Dimitri Chamblas initiate and produce projects in cooperation with artists from various fields, particularly from the field of choreography, to displace the usual spaces of dance and bring together multiple partners, not just at the conception stage, but also during production and distribution.
